#1 GET YOUR OIL CHANGED EVERY 3,000 MILES.
This used to be the gold standard when it came to automotive maintenance.
However, cars and trucks these days are controlled more by computer and have better technology than ever before. What does that mean? Follow your manufacturer’s specifications for maintenance. Don’t rush out there to get your oil changed immediately. Many manufacturers are now recommending every 5,000 miles or even more. I was shocked to learn that my first BMW needed the oil changed every 10,000 miles and that was several years ago. On the flip side, don’t scrimp on maintenance. If you don’t get your fluids changed and checked on schedule, you may increase your need for repairs down the road.
#2 WASH YOUR CAR WITH DISHWASHING SOAP.
Well, only if you want to have it look absolutely terrible! Save some bucks washing at home, but use a formula that’s intended to protect the paint and the finish. Otherwise, you’ll be damaging your paint and a quality paint job can be very expensive. Keep the steel wool away from the kids too if you’re going to let them help.
#3 FLUSH YOUR OIL RESERVOIR WITH WATER.
If you are having major problems with your car, take it to an expert. Never put anything in a fluid reservoir that wasn’t designed to be put there in the first place. Think about who is giving you advice before you take it. Anyone can seem like an expert online.
#4 MAKE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR BLINKER FLUID.
