General Motors introduced the first Pontiac make and model in 1926. The name Pontiac was derived from a local Native chief who led a battle against the British and failed. Like other motor vehicle brands, Pontiac was hit hard by the Great Depression.
In 1932, Pontiac combined manufacturing with Chevrolet. After the war, Pontiac was profitable and produced a number of successful mid-sized vehicles with distinct styling in the 60s. Although the Pontiac brand has been retired, models like the GTO remain well-known and highly sought after.
