Collinsville Auto: Safe Tips for Driving Home For The Holidays

It’s hard to believe that the holidays are right around the corner! If you’re planning on joining the millions of people who hit the roadways this year to see friends and family who live within driving distance, it’s a good idea to brush up on some tips for making the trip home safer. At Collinsville Auto our customers and their family’s safety is our top priority! Here are a few tips we have put together to help make that possible this Holiday trip.

Pre-Trip Inspection

Even if you’ve been diligent about keeping up with your vehicle’s maintenance so far, it’s a good idea to take it in for a pre-trip inspection. Taking this step can help prevent breakdowns and tire issues which can increase the safety factor of your trip. Opting to take your car in for holiday traveling maintenance can also reduce the stress that a malfunctioning vehicle can bring to a time that is supposed to be focused on fun and family. We would be more than happy to inspect your vehicle for you! Call us today to book your pre-trip inspection.

Pack an Emergency Road Kit

You don’t have to have a malfunctioning vehicle to need an emergency road kit. A car accident, freak snowstorm or some other emergency could also disable your vehicle. You should be prepared with a basic emergency road kit that contains items such as:

  • jumper cables
  • first aid kit
  • warm clothes
  • non-perishable food and drinking water
  • cat litter or other traction material
  • ice scraper
  • basic hand tools
  • small shovel
  • snow brush
  • blankets

Plan Your Route

You’ll probably rely on the GPS on your smartphone to guide you on your journey, but you should still become familiar with the route that you’ll be taking. Take the time to look over the planned roads to gauge locations that might be ideal for gas stops and food breaks. If possible, leave early in the morning or later in the evening when the roads are less likely to be busy.

Be Informed About the Weather

Living in Connecticut, you’re probably used to winter weather but stay updated about the projected weather conditions along your route. Knowing what to expect along your route can help you plan and stay safe. Mountainous roads might have slick and snowy conditions that make it difficult for road crews to keep clear, for example.

Hide Your Valuables

While traveling, it can be easy to let your guard down — especially when you have a specific schedule you’re trying to adhere to. Make sure to keep your valuables stowed out of the way so potential thieves don’t see an opportunity. Keep presents and expensive items in the trunk or in a covered storage area.
